Historically, society has deemed black cats as “evil” or associated with witches. During the middle ages it wasn’t uncommon for cats to be killed, so the idea of black cats being “devilish” was spread across like wild fire. Around the time of September and October black cats became the main targets of torture and torment. This idea is still believed by many more in modern times and many more cats have lost their lives and suffered all because of a made up myth.
In 2020, the organization NIH(National Institutes of health) conducted studies and investigations where it shows black cats around the world have the highest euthanasia and lowest adoption rates.
Black cats are often euthanized and the last pick to be adopted according to the National Library of medicine. It’s obvious that it’s discrimination that’s led them to this point. It’s truly upsetting that people allow superstitions to get a hold onto their way of thinking. It holds them back from seeing past the myths.
Putting past superstitions, black cats aren’t just symbols, they’re living beings. Black cats just like any other cat are capable of being loving and caring for their owners. They shouldn’t be discriminated against because of what was applied to them by rumors made by us human beings.
Many people have expressed their opinion that black cats are a witches’ friend. What people label as “witches” are often individuals with spiritual and beliefs that differ from the norm. Those differences should be met with respect and without judgement. People are associating black cats with darkness or evil based solely on superstitions. Cats, like all animals, have no control over their appearance or what they’re associated with. Black cats are as lovable as any other breed, and they deserve to be treated with respect.
Although there are laws preventing people from committing such inhumane crimes, it doesn’t actually stop it at the root of the problem. A way to contribute would be to adopt or foster any black cats in your local area. Providing these furbabies a home to stay safe helps avoid the cats from falling into the wrong hands. Believe it or not, wrongfully minded people adopt cats just to do the worst imaginable things with the intention of harming them. If adopting isn’t an option, a way to provide any sort of assistance would be to build an at home shelter where cats are able to hide and stay warm from the cold weather.
Black cats aren’t evil. We as a whole could educate those who believe the myths debunk them. Organizations can form to solely help black cats find home and keep them safe because every cat deserves to feel love.
