Every December people around the world put up lights, listen to Christmas classics, and begin shopping for gifts for loved ones to embrace the holiday spirit. For many people Christmas isn’t what it used to be, instead of celebrating religious traditions and spending time with our loved ones, we get wrapped into expensive gifts and festivities. According to the Baylor Lariat website, “People seem more focused on capturing the “perfect” Christmas moment for social media than quietly reflecting on the deeper meaning of the holiday.”
People have celebrated Christmas for the wrong reasons over many years, and we need to remember the true meaning of Christmas.
In today’s society, Christmas has shifted towards a competition rather than a holiday to spend with friends and family. People usually spend more time searching for the “perfect gift” rather than finding a gift that holds personal value and significance. Instead of prioritizing love and joy, we have substituted the best gift – each other – for glitter and gadgets that fill our malls. Christmas has deeper meaning than all the things we can find in malls, and many people don’t reflect on the origin of this holiday. Instead, the holiday has turned into how much money we can spend and who can give the “best gift.” Not about spreading joy and love.
Nowadays people are wrapped into the judgment of social media. A new trend over the years is people don’t celebrate Christmas traditionally and want things to be more “minimalist.” The whole point of Christmas is to celebrate loved ones and the joy of the season, not to get wrapped into trends and forget about what is important. According to the NBC, “With tighter wallets and evolving tastes, younger generations will streamline their seasonal spending, choosing experiences, tech upgrades or travel over collectible decor. The shift changes what holiday cheer looks like at home, as old favorites give way to a new aesthetic.” Now, younger generations rather have aesthetics than celebrating with traditional decorations that hold nostalgia.
While some people argue that the true meaning of Christmas isn’t fully celebrated anymore because not everyone around the world is Christian. Since people have different religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds, not everyone connects with the holiday’s original religious roots. However, even with these differences, Christmas has become a time where many people — regardless of their beliefs — come together to spend time with loved ones and appreciate what the year has brought them.
People don’t celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, instead they focus on gift giving and social media. Society needs to take that change and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas which is spending time with loved ones and honoring the original spirit of the holiday.
