Students are responsible for arriving to class on time, but some decide to take their time. John Horn high school decided to take matters into their own hands and established a new system, this being the kiosk system.
“I think the new system is effective,” Art teacher Joel Crowe said. “I’ve seen teachers working from the kiosk station, and I’ve seen the number of students showing up late decrease. It shows how impactful it is and the amount students are going to their classes on time will increase.”
Although some agree the kiosk is a good thing other students such as junior Nevah Banda receive the tardies themselves and disagree and believe the students will still rebel against the system.
“I don’t think the kiosk is as effective as the school thought it was gonna be,” Banda said. “From my understanding there’s a certain amount of time before you get counted absent, you could show up with a tardy pass and be present. Students will try to squeeze as much as they can out of the situation.”
The system seems unfair to students like sophomore Emily Soto, the range between her classes are far from each other which is a worry to be late.
“People in packs take up the entire hallway which takes me longer to get to my classes,” Soto said. “The hallways feel super chaotic like I can’t get through sometimes, if I try to push past someone they’re gonna look at me weird. The distance and the amount of people really plays a part in whether I’ll be late or not.”
Soto believes the new system takes from the students’ learning time and prefers the old way of counting tardies.
“I think the old way was better,¨ Soto said. ¨Because whenever the teacher would take attendance you wouldn’t be in the class yet, it’d be easier for everyone, and reduced the amount of time taken from learning.”
