As the school year kicks into high gear, everything seems to move at lightspeed, and the organizations that we have seem like a passing blur. In this blur, the beautiful and outstanding opportunities are left unknown.
“We have a lot of students at this school, and with that comes a large number of clubs.” Assistant Principal Terry Riley said. “Since we have a large number of clubs, it gives the student body a constant feeling of information overload.”
This information overload gives the students too many options. These options, if not immediately interesting to a highschooler, are thrown to the back of the brain, and only remembered in passing.
“Very rarely do people put up fliers, and even if they do many of the fliers get torn down and are a blur when you’re walking in the hallways,” Leader of the DnD club, Senior Sarah Tadesse said.
What should be done is focus on some of these electives, not just Band and choir, the lesser known electives that can unknowingly change someone’s life.
“We have to find better ways to connect to our students, because a lot of times we take the lazy way out and just throw it on our social media thinking that students get it there, but what we need to do is have teachers promote these organizations in class,” Riley said. “We need to make an environment where students feel comfortable joining some of these electives or organizations.”
Time spent in a comfortable environment, is the time most cherished.
“Different students from different academic backgrounds, coming together with different opinions that can compromise with one another, can help the school become a better setting,” Senior Ian Lee said. “Everyone in each organization is different but they’re all kind in their own way,”
Even though there’s a huge amount of organizations at our school, there may not be many that fit you.
“It’s a good thing that not every elective fits you, because finding 2-3 organizations that you enjoy, is the best way to have a good highschool experience,” Valedictorian Guadelupe Hernandez said.
Just like there is not a specific elective for everyone, there is not a specific career path anyone can follow. There are many organizations at our school that can lead to potential career opportunities.
“We have Computer Science, JROTC, Band, Robotics, Cosmetics, Fashion design, Barber School, CTE, Culinary, Photo-journalism and Journalism, Interior Design, and so many more, ” Riley said. “There are so many career opportunities, it’s just that they are either not advertised enough, or there is a required class that you have to take which turns many people away.”
There are even many organizations that are good if you just want to have some fun in high school.
“I joined Dungeon and Dragons because I wanted a place where I could let my creativity flow, and where I could connect with other people and play games like these, and I joined SNHS just because I really love history in general,” Tadesse said. “Not one that I’m in, but one that I find very interesting is the drone interest group,” Lee said. “Those who are interested in drones, are able to build their own drones and test them out, and have fun with them.”
There’s so much time left regardless of what grade someone’s in. It’s almost never too late to enjoy these unique and outstanding electives.
“I joined golf, Young Minds for Change, and Student Council all in my junior year,” Lee said. “I joined Tri-M and Social Studies National Honor this year,” Tedesse said.
The fun of looking all over and then finally finding what you want to do, is the purpose of highschool.
“We need to, as a school, try to promote these electives. Whether it’s on the announcements, by posters, or even by word of mouth.” Riley said. We
At the end of the day every opportunity gained is a new skill, and every skill gained is a new opportunity.
“You’re most powerful in the areas you do well in, thus pursuing things that you find interesting is the best way to be proud of your makings,” Wilburn said.
